During the Skyshroud Peace Hundreds of years have passed since the Great War had gone, leaving the world scorched and broken in its wake. The Scholars and Magi were never able to ascertain the cause of the Calamity that fell from the Heavens and sparked the War’s inferno. The terrestrial events brought into motion by the Calamity have since been forgotten, even the long-living Elves that walk the Forests were born after the conflict had ended, and their fathers had no notion of the politics that set the nations against each other. Finally, after generations of Destruction, peace slowly dawned. The people, having set aside their differences, set all their crafts and resources to rebuild. The cracked and barren battlefields of the past were sewn with the seeds of a mighty forest, the Skyshroud. The Skyshroud spreads to all reaches of the Continent, a verdant memorial whose towering canopy blocks out the heavens, offering to all a peaceful twilight, unburdened by the nameless fear that birthed the Calamity.

The Rebuilt World The far-reaching empires of the past dwindled after the War’s end. Nestled in the protective arms of the Skyshroud Forest are the various smaller city-states built since the Peace, sprung up from virgin territory. The ruins of the past are overgrown by the jungle, entombed under teeming life. These city-nations of the Peace no longer have standing armies, and the brilliant minds of the Age are no longer bent on war-machines or destruction. Science, politics, magical advancement and industry drive the wheels of the world, a world moving towards peaceful enlightenment, instead of warlords and bloodstained empires. Of course, the new world is no Utopia. Just as violent days will breed men whose minds are full of steel and blood, days of prosperity breed men with minds of greed and ambition. Positions of enormous political power and wealth are only obtained by the few, and those in power will fight and plot as viciously as those who seek to usurp the powerful. The power of industry lies in trade, and trade requires travel between the cities. The Forest is fiercely guarded by the Skyshroud Elves, sylvan sentinels who ensure even a blind grandmother with a basket of gold could cross safely from one end to the other. In a gold-hungry world, trade cannot abide the slow paths through the woods, and all manner of banditry and piracy prey on those whose greed drives them to take unguarded paths overland and across the seas. Within the cities, while technically at Peace, espionage and sabotage replace diplomacy and democracy. Furthermore, and potentially most dangerously, the Peace has lasted so long, the tales of powerful artifacts and ancient magics from the War remain, while the cautionary morality of those who survived the War has faded. The rich and ambitious often back the adventurous and vainglorious to trek into the forgotten depths of the Skyshroud Forest to reclaim wonders of past years. Wonders that the builders of the Forest and creators of the Peace buried in the undergrowth to prevent the world from being unmade…
